Over the last decade or so we have seen a rise in people becoming more health-conscious. In the news, reports of fitness are becoming more popular than ever. There are even major health issues tackled such as the banning of trans fats in fast food restaurants. Along with these trends, the health effects of smoking and smokers limitations have made hot topics in leading new stories.
When such a large portion of the population rises up against a health hazard such as smoking, retaliation is inevitable. In fact, an alliance was formed with smokers who support the rights of people to smoke when and where they want to. These people claim that the health effects of smoking are not nearly as dangerous as reported. The same group also says that claims of lung cancer do cigarettes are misleading.
So which side is telling the truth? Are cigarettes dangerous? Are serious health effects of smoking a reality as reported in the news? Are the people who fight for “smoker's rights” correct in their claims that smoking is not really bad for you?
The Painful Reality
Those individuals who fight for smoker's rights and deny the claims of dangerous health effects of smoking are having their points knocked off one by one from literally every new scientific study and research finding that becomes published. The painful reality is that the dangers that smoking brings upon adults, children, and even household pets, is intensely alarming.
In recent years the number one negative health effects of smoking was lung cancer. But today scientists and biologists know more about the human body than ever before and are discovering that smoking cigarettes can lead to cancer of other areas of the body. Bladder cancer, liver cancer, throat cancer, and mouth cancer are just a few examples of diseases that is known to be caused from smoking.
Heart disease is another major concern that not only smokers need to worry about, but also people who must put up with secondhand smoking (non-smokers that breathe around other people who smoke). The arteries around the heart become dried and this causes a great amount of stress to be put on the heart to pump harder and faster. The entire vascular system can become diseased from smoking.
Heart disease and cancer are not the only negative health effects of smoking that we all need to worry about. Ailments that seem like minor issues in the beginning can grow into major diseases in years to come. Such examples include asthma, pneumonia, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic sore throat, chronic coughing, and literally every other disease imaginable that relates to the respiratory system.
